5 Summer Must-Haves!

Umbrella - Charming Charlie

Things are heating up BFFs!!! The start of summer is here and as I am writing this post, the AC is on full blast to combat the heat from the 3-digit weather that we've been getting in California. Needless to say, this blog is a must-read if you want to go through the summer safe and beautiful! These are my top 5 essentials for summer. Now I could've added many more items to the list, but then I'll have you stuck on this page forever (hmmmm #goals). Enjoy the read and stay cool lovies.

1 - Protect Yourself

I can go on and on about the importance of sunscreen. Are you applying sunscreen daily? I do. When I first moved to Cali from Holland, I noticed how hot the sun here was every day and I also noticed that a lot of people who loved being in the sun had skin that looked like dry, crepe paper. This is when I started using sunblock religiously. In Holland, where its often rainy and overcast, I hardly ever used SPF, but I know better now. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Whenever someone asks what my 'skin care secret' is, I refer to sunscreen. To keep my face from turning into an oil slick, I use a different sunscreen on my face then I use on my body. I tend to switch brands from time to time, but right now I'm using Neutrogena Age Shield Face with SPF 110 on my face. On my body, I tend to use a sport sunscreen since these seem to be extra sweat/water resistant and I also apply lip balm with SPF in it below my lipstick or gloss. BFFs, aside from wrinkles and anti-aging, sunscreen protects from getting skin cancer. According to, one in five Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. Protect yourself! It's so easy to do and can actually safe your life!

(Kim Tip: Sun or no sun, apply sunscreen daily! Damaging rays can still penetrate your skin, even on cloudy days!)

2 - Seek Shade

Sometimes sunblock alone is not enough, especially when you are outside in the hot sun! There is no sunblock that will block out 100% of all damaging rays, so to make up for this, seek shade whenever you can, especially during the hottest part of the day (between 10 am - 2 pm). Sure, a tree or tall building will do, but if these are not present, you can bring your own shade with you. For your eyes, which need protection too, of course a cute set of sunnies will do. You can also wear a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off your face. I am laughing as I write this, because in Holland, umbrellas are mainly used to protect you from the rain or even snow. Here, in California, umbrellas are used as a sun-shield. I find this very handy, because unlike wearing a hat, your hair do stays intact. Yes, BFFs, a cute umbrella, like the one at the top of this page, can be the finishing touch to your style!

(Kim Tip: Whether you need a hat, sunnies or an umbrella, accessory stores like Charming Charlie conveniently feature all items you need to combat the sun under one roof...Yay!)

3 - Romp Around Town!

Dressing comfortably during hot days can get challenging. My go-to piece during days when I don't know what to wear is a romper! Yes bffs, you must have at least one cute romper in your closet. These onesies are so easy and eliminate having to think about what to wear, because they are your top and bottom in one. Rompers are generally made of summer-friendly materials that leave room to breathe and prevent sticky or sweaty situations. When cooler night time falls, you can easily add a cropped jacket to keep warm and still look cute.

(Kit Tip: Always try on rompers before buying them. Ignore the tag, because one size does not fit all! Make sure to prevent wedgies -- the size of the romper should always fit your body comfortably)

4 - Let Your Feet Breathe!

There's nothing worst than squeezing your feet into some warm shoes, high heels or thick sneakers that are suffocating your toes during summer heat. (Taking those babies off your feet is treacherous and sometimes even smelly!) Yes BFFs, when it comes to feet....Less is More too! Coming from Holland, I'm still getting over the fact that people in the US wear flip flops as their shoes. In Europe, flip flops are worn indoors only as house slippers. I was so happy about this, because I love the comfort of flip flops! Which brings me to my #4 must-haves.... Sandals! Yes, every girl need at least one pair of sandals. Ideally with open toes and straps so the shoe becomes like jewelry for your feet. Sandals can have a wedge heel or just be plain flat. Trust me, when the heat kicks in, your feet will be grateful for your choice of shoes!

(Kim Tip: When in doubt, go for a pair of black and/or a pair of tan sandals because these often go with all outfits.)

5 - Avoid the Cake!

Meaning the cake-face!!!! There is nothing worse than wearing a full face of makeup in scorching hot weather. I've learned this first hand. When I first came to Cali, I would wear my normal makeup as I did in chilly Holland in the middle of summer, only to find it dripping down my face as I was sweating trying to get throughout the day. A smudgy, streaky face is not in fashion guys! Now, I know better... I keep it light throughout the day. A tinted moisturizer can offer nice, light coverage. If you do use foundation, look for one with SPF and apply it with a moist makeup sponge to get that perfect light tint of coverage. Avoid heavy eyeliner and so-called Instagram brows, because these might just end up running down your face on a scorching hot day. A light swipe of tinted or clear mascara through your lashes and brows is all you need. To avoid bleeding lips, use a natural, nude lipgloss or maybe even a tinted lip balm. Keep it light and let your natural beauty shine though! Remember, makeup is supposed to enhance your features, not hide them. Quick little secret... YouTube makeup tutorials might result in a gorgeous, flawless look on screen, but in order to get to that point, a lot of makeup is caked on. For the camera, generally more makeup is applied than you naturally would put on. This makes the colors come through very clearly. In real life, trying to get the same effect might not look so natural. (Just think of all those shots of celebrities caught without makeup... They look like regular people rather than the flawless individuals they are made out to be in movies and magazines.)

(Kit Tip: Mix your foundation with a little bit of your day creme to make your own tinted moisturizer and create that "no-makeup" flawless look)
